May 2023’s newsletter main feature, “Fledged in Storms Playlist.”
Hello, friend! Welcome back to another addition of my Dragon’s Horde of Friends newsletter.
Hey, you know what’s fun?
Playlists!
Someday, I would like to create a separate playlist for each major character in my novel “Fledged in Storms,” and add to them with each new book release so the lists will build as the characters change and grow.
“Fledged in Storms” is still in the long, long publishing process for now. So in the meantime, I’ve put together a single book playlist. You can listen to it on my YouTube channel here:
As an extra special treat for you in my Dragon’s Horde of Friends, I’ve also included my thoughts on why I picked each song below. (I tried to avoid spoilers as best I could.)
I hope you enjoy!
Two birds on a Wire (Regina Spektor)
- Where else to begin but with the song that started it all? Two Birds on a Wire was my inspiration for this series, and the sweet tone perfectly sets the scene for the peaceful fields around the village of Rittaun. Well, peaceful for now…
Born to Fly (Sara Evans)
- This song is for one of my main characters, Karoku. He was born to fly. What song better captures his excitement to leave home and do great things?
This Town (Kygo)
- This song echoes Karoku’s longing to escape his small village. While Born to Fly captures his excitement, I think This Town captures his desperation not to live and die in one place like everyone else he knows.
Take Me Home, Country Roads (John Denver)
- We had Karoku’s dream, now we have our other main character, Julian. There’s no place he loves more than Rittaun and his country home.
A Forest (The Cure)
- There’s something in the forest. Something watching from the storms…
Campfire Tales (Alessandro Penna, Hjalmun The Bard)
- This peaceful instrumental reminds me of sitting around a table in the tavern and listening to the traveling wizard Nanti tell her stories of the road.
Riders on the Storm (The Door)
- Given the title “Fledged in Storms,” I had to include at least one storm song on this list. I chose Riders of the Storm for its atmosphere rather than its lyrics.
The Greatest Show (The Greatest Showman)
- What’s this? The circus has come to town! Imagine the wonder of watching the circus for the first time– and underneath that, Karoku’s hope for a ticket out of Rittaun.
When I’m Older (Frozen 2)
- It’s hard being a child in an adventure novel, huh? When you’re young, it’s easy to think that the adults have it all figured out. It’s painful to realize that they don’t.
The Twisted Woods (Robert Austin Music)
- This instrumental is just so spooky and haunting. It gives an atmosphere of wandering dark woods with the unknown lurking around every corner.
After the Storm (Mumford and Sons)
- Rittaun has been through a lot, but they will survive. There is a fresh day to look forward to after the storm.
See You Again (Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth)
- It’s hard to say goodbye. This song captures the bitter-sweetness of friends parting, but their love stays strong even with the distance between them.
I’ll Wait (Kygo and Sasha Sloan)
- This might be a romantic song, but I see it as Karoku’s and Julian’s friendship and their unbreakable love for each other.
