Character Art of Saffire

July 2026’s Newsletter: “Character Art of Saffire”

I’ve been sketching lately. I didn’t set out to draw around a theme, but after I got started, I found myself inspired by Saffire: our brave and honorable young knight from my WIP “Dez and the Iron Prince.” So it looks like this month, we have a small portfolio of art of Saffire and related topics.

We start off with art of Saf out of uniform, in a dress-style found in her home Province. It isn’t something we get to see her wear during the story. I felt inspired to draw her in a more casual look! But why did I pick such a difficult pose? This was supposed to be an easy one… can’t make it too simple for myself, I guess!

Art of Saffire chasing after her brother and sister as they casually chat and stroll. All three wear knight's uniforms, and her brother carries a sword.

The three siblings of House Fire. I wanted to draw Saf with her brother and sister.

There was an earlier sketch I trashed because I couldn’t get their poses right before I settled on this one.

Layers in a knight's uniform. The undershirt and pants, the gambeson, chainmail and bracers, the outer tunic and belt, and the knight's sword.

This is the standard knight’s uniform. Since some of the Provinces are much hotter or cooler than others, I’m considering whether knights would alter the uniform while operating in their home Province to account for the climate.

This sketch is something of a trial run. I’ve been thinking for a while that it’d be cool if I made a portfolio for the various fashions from the five Provinces. This sketch let me practice laying out multiple outfits on one page, sizing note text, etc. I can see what I’d improve in a future iteration.

Four femme outfits from Southwestbound. A crop top tied over one shoulder and matching skirt and buckled sandals, a spaghetti-strap dress with flowers at the waist and thin-strapped sandals, a halter crop top with a split-side skirt over shorts and flat shoes, and a spaghetti-strap halter top with shorts and thin-strapped sandals.

I went on to sketch some sample outfits of femme clothing from Saffire’s home Province, Southwestbound. Southwestbound’s territory mostly consists of tropical rainforest, so their clothing is lightweight and dries quickly. They prefer bright, highly saturated colors. The kingdom doesn’t have the strict gender roles we do, so anyone can wear feminine and masculine clothing.

Four masc outfits from southwestbound. A vest and flowing shorts with buckled sandals, a tanktop with shorts and buckled sandals, a lace-up shirt with breeches and simple shoes, and a crop top with lace-up shorts and thin-strapped sandals.

Southwestbound masc clothing.

It was over 95 degrees outside while I was drawing this one. Man did these outfits look nice and cool!

Now that I’ve started drawing example outfits from the Provinces, I think I’ll have to keep going. I can’t show one Province and not the other four!

I might do a more detailed portfolio someday, with color and notes about the Provinces’ fashions. Maybe even including hairstyles as well. But that’s a much larger project for the future.

For now, I hope you’ve enjoyed my art of Saffire and her home!

Thanks for reading!
